We are very proud to announce that our completely new editor is now available for all users on all communities! :raised_hands::pencil2: We have invested a lot of time to give you and your users more options to create richer content in an easy way - so we hope that you will enjoy working with the new editor as much as we do!

We are investigating line-height / spacing inconsistencies as well as problems with selecting text on some viewports (e.g. Safari on iOS).

Polls are temporarily not available, but will be added again soon.

 Overview of improvements

There are many things which have improved with the new editor, just to name a few:

Improved existing features

  • Image upload
    • Drag & drop images into the editor instead of manual upload
    • Captions (descriptive text underneath uploaded images)
  • Code
    • In-line code is now possible (previously code was in an extra line)
    • Code syntax (code is not being stripped automatically anymore)
  • Lists
    • Multi-level lists are possible now
    • Better UX in working with lists (previously lists could not be interrupted by line breaks)
  • Text styling
    • Text styling within lists was not fully supported before

New features

  • Tables!
  • Callouts
  • Text color / background color
  • Horizontal lines

Of course not all of these features are available to end users, some of these (e.g. text color, header, callouts) are only available in the Control environment for now. We have plans to make this available to front-end users via user roles in the future, so that you are in control of who can make use of these features - please share your thoughts on this with us in the comments!

Feedback

Please let us know what you think of this improvement, also how your users are feeling about it. This way we can adjust and improve the editor even further in the future!

And another question: What editor are you planning on using for private messages? Until now, there is the old editor in action.

    Almost missed that one. :)

So as far as I know, the private message text editor is (much) harder to replace with the new editor due to the way it is implemented in the platform. Of course we want all editors to be the same, however this one we had to postpone - due to the amount of extra work.

YES! 🙂 I’d also like to see this coming with it. We’re of course not forgetting about this idea and will come back on this in our bigger, quarterly ideation review. Will share an article covering this (and all other ideas) soon!

    Hi @bjoern_schulze,

    thanks for flagging this.

On the old editor, your community had a module which we activated so that registered users cannot upload files. With the new editor this (undocumented) module was not working any more.

The intention was to activate another module temporarily for your community in order to achieve the desired outcome, until the previous state is restored.

It came to our attention however that this has the negative side effect that also image upload will not be shown. So the decision was made not to use this.

I am not sure why this was added regardless, either it was miscommunication or it accidentially was activated. I have removed this now again from your community to revert back to the previous state and I will investigate why this was activated.

Quotes are now a disaster for both visitors and moderators, resulting in very weird looking posts with empty quotes which you can"t delete.

Worst of all, we can"t even fix the code because the BB-code editor is gone.

Let me reproduce it for you.

(Adding a quote manually and editing the message afterwards. Now you try and fix it.)

That"s okay, in fact it"s better if more people address the same thing :)

    Agreed.

    Hey,

Before I dive into an update I’d like to thank you all for your patience so far and the feedback you shared with us, it’s great to read your feedback and build better products together with you. We’ve received, reviewed and followed up on your feedback – in this update I’d like to break it down to the status quo and our plans. The bullets are deliberate; short summaries over lengthy paragraphs 😉

    Delivered

The following enhancements have been made after the release. Please let us know if the issues still persist

    • @mention fixes in control and destination
    • build-in spell checker has been added to the editor. Hold the ctrl/cmd key when right-clicking misspelled words to see spelling suggestions
    • improvements to selecting text on mobile devices. Copy/paste issues might still persist, see below

    Priority lane

The following items are on our radar to enhance or fix first

    • (User) quote and its behaviour (break a quoted section, multi-quotes, exit a quote, remove a quote etc.)
    • Attachment permission setting in Control
    • Mobile behaviour for selecting, copy, cut and paste content
    • Add bold/italic/underline options to smaller viewports*

*Bold/italic/underline will be added based on your feedback - historically speaking they have never been a default functionality of the mobile editor

    Next

The following items will be enhanced over time

    • Input placeholder in reply and description field (previous phrases will be restored)
    • Replace default editor font with your company font
    • Outgoing URLs open in new tab
    • Rendering of content when pasting a link or image
    • Rendering of content when assigning a best answer or editing a post with BBcode
    • Line-spacing improvements in content. This excludes the new paragraph that is started when pressing enter.
    • The possibility to add spaces to hyperlinks

    Investigating

We are aware of the following feedback but we’re unable to reproduce and resolve it so far. Please let us know if and when this happens to you.

    • Content in the editor is always shown in italics
    • Error message ‘Text can’t be empty’ when you have text in the editor

    Where is my feedback?

We tried to bundle and address all feedback in this update, if you feel we missed out on your feedback (or other feedback) please let us know.

Enhancements are on its way to resolve your most challenging issues, bear with us 🙏🏼 As always updates will be shared here on inSpired, thank you!

    hmm were to post…

I posted it here, but should I fully type this here as well? Ah well, Il just copy paste.

    Hey all,

Also some feedback from our side now after the roll-out. Overall it looks far more fluent, so that’s good 🙂 But unfortunately this also brings a number of set backs.

    Major one:

The pre implemented text, which Julian also showed above, has been removed. This is quite a set back as this doesn’t give any hints to the topic starter anymore. Why has this function been removed? As I can"t seem to find any mention other than the screenshot from Julian on this. This is quite a major set back. I"m talking about these phrases:https://attachment.freshdesk.com/inline/attachment?token=eyJ0eXAiOiJKV1QiLCJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJpZCI6NTExNTQyMDk2MywiZG9tYWluIjoiaW5zaWRlZC5mcmVzaGRlc2suY29tIiwiYWNjb3VudF9pZCI6MTU0MTY1fQ.m8bhaZC92wHBXEMOq9aNeJYHYsiYJMrWPJ8ke3nLK6A

Another major one: Chrome spelling check doesn’t work anymore, is there a workaround for this? Right now it just shows me that I have a different language selected, but I cant change it anymore.

Another major one: The font used seems to be Roboto now, that is not on Brand with our company. Do others have brand rules on fonts too? What can we do about this?

    Other minor set backs:

    • A number of emoticons don"t seem to switch when typing them, I also can"t see the codes when hovering over the emoticons in the menu, is there a list with the working codes?
    • BB code editing is completely gone although the editor is still able to read it?
    • Deleting double quote lines leaves a small quote space, this is mostly annoying when you have quotes in quote and want to respond to only one of them and deleting the rest, you can’t fully delete the last little line unless you remove the entire quoting part in itself.

Also the changing of quotes works very weird. I suggest looking into this function and trying to change some double quotes for yourself.
Removing and adding text, typing before quotes (also didn’t work before). We have more instances where multi quoting now seems to work counter intuitive.

(But Mark already adressed this above)

Thanks, @Yoeri! Just wanted to add my thanks for prioritizing the quote behavior. A superuser shared this example with me, and I share here in case it’s useful (though I know there are other examples on this thread, too).

“Unlike the old editor, the new one does not insert a space/break in response to the Enter key being pressed. Here"s how I sliced up a quote in the old editor:”

I’m hoping you’ll be rolling these fixes out in quick succession, as I’m starting to lose superuser activity over the fact that they can’t even write properly on our community.

    Thanks for the update @Yoeri

Our Superuser Folkert just tested the spell checker, but it still doesn"t work. Only gives options to copy/paste/cut:

In order to post gifs I was used to the following workflow:

    1. I find a gif and open it
    2. I right-click on it and choose “Copy image”
    3. I go to the community and into the editor
    4. I use CTRL-V to paste the image
    5. The gif is inserted and already runs

When I do this now, only a still image is being pasted instead of the gif.

    Example:

I want to paste this GIF into my comment: https://thumbs.gfycat.com/FatherlyEnergeticKinkajou-size_restricted.gif

    Here you go:
